Where can I see red squirrels? ›

Scotland and Ireland are where the red squirrel now has its main strongholds. In England, red squirrels only survive on the Isle of Wight and Brownsea Island, where there are no greys, on the Formby coast, and in the extensive pine forests of Northumberland and the Lake District.

Records show that red squirrels were still found in the north, the north-east (e.g. Linacre Woods), mid- and south Derbyshire in the 1960s. By the end of the 1970s they had gone from the south, the NE and mid-Derbyshire, remaining only in parts of the Peak District.

With their tufty ears and orange coats, red squirrels were once the only squirrel in the UK and could be seen almost anywhere. But the introduction of grey squirrels and a loss of suitable forests has dramatically reduced the red's numbers and forced those that remain to retreat into remote wild landscapes.

Red squirrels mate in late winter. They nest in hollow trees or build a 12- to 19-inch ball-shaped nest in a tree top using leaves, twigs and bark. In early spring, females have two to five babies which are born hairless and weigh less than an ounce. The young squirrels are independent within 12 weeks.

Red squirrels are notoriously more aggressive than the far more docile gray variety; some of whom can sometimes almost seem shy. That's not to say, however, that red squirrels are more active than gray ones, as both are quite the busybodies, with neither variety slowing down to hibernate during the winter.

Some females produce litters in both April and August, but others produce just one litter annually during one of these periods. Sexual maturation of the young occurs the winter following their birth. Red squirrels may live 10 years, although 3-5 years is the average life span for adults.

Range: Red squirrels occur throughout the northern United States and parts of Canada, south into the Appalachian Mountains. They are also found in the Rocky Mountains south to Arizona and New Mexico.
